A HOT POTATO: vấn đề nan giải

HIGH AND LOW = HERE AND THERE: mọi nơi
Example: I have been searching high and low for the book I bought for my best friend.

BUMP INTO: tình cờ gặp ai đó
Example: I bumped into my Amslink’s teacher while going shopping.

BEAT ABOUT THE BUSH: nói vòng vo, lạc đề
Example: Stop beating about the bush and answer my question.

TAKE SOMETHING INTO ACCOUNT/ CONSIDERATION: xem xét việc gì
Example: Amslink will take student’s level and school schedule into account when arranging class.

CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO STOOLS: tiến thoái lưỡng nan
Example: It is difficult to organize an event that appeals to both young and old; you could end up being caught between two stools.

BREAK A LEG: chúc may mắn
Example: I have heard that you’re gonna take Amslink’s Cambridge Exam Challenge tomorrow, break a leg!

HIT THE BOOKS: học
Example: I will sit the Amslink’s Cambridge Exam Challenge next week. That’s why I have been hitting the books all day long.

Example: You don’t mean that. You’re just pulling my leg.

SELL/GO LIKE HOT CAKES: bán đắt như tôm tươi
Example: The book has only just been published and copies are already selling like hot cakes in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city.

OFF AND ON/ ON AND OFF: không đều đặn, thỉnh thoảng
Example: We don’t often go there- just off and on.

KEEP AN EYE ON: coi chừng, ngó chừng
Example: Please keep an eye on my baby while I’m out for a while.

MAKE ENDS MEET: xoay sở để kiếm sống
Example: I have to work at two jobs to make ends meet.

LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG: để lộ bí mật
Example: It’s a secret. Try not to let the cat out of the bag!

BE OUT OF THE QUESTION: không thể được
Example: You cannot get married until you are 18, it’s out of the question.

LEAD SOMEBODY BY THE NOSE: dắt mũi ai
Example: They simply didn’t know what they were doing and they were led by the nose by a manipulative government

BLOW ONE’S TRUMPET: bốc phét, khoác lác
Example: Anyone will tell you she’s one of the best journalist we’ve got, although she’d never blow her trumpet.

GET A KICK OUT OF SOMETHING: tìm thấy sự thú vị ở cái gì đó
Example: I really get a kick out of Amslink’s courses since they help me improve English fluency and accuracy

A PIECE OF CAKE: dễ ợt
Example: Getting a band 6 in the speaking test will be a piece of cake.

ON THE GO: bận rộn
Example: I feel as though we always need to be on the go because life’s too short to be idle!

UNDER THE WEATHER: ốm, không khỏe
Example: I noticed that the dog was looking a little under the weather.

AT THE DROP OF A HAT: Ngay lập tức
Example: If you need me, just call me. I can come at the drop of a hat.

SPLITTING HEADACHE: đau đầu như búa bổ
Example: I’ve got a splitting headache. I’m going upstairs for a nap.

ON THE HOUSE: không phải trả tiền
Example: I went to a restaurant last night. I was the ten thousandth customer, so my dinner was on the house.

EVERY NOW AND THEN: sometimes
Example: Every now and then, I want to be alone.

ON THE VERGE OF = ON THE BRINK OF = IN THE EDGE OF: trên bờ vực
Example: Unless we take measures to protect tigers, they will be on the verge of extinction.

SLEEP ON IT: suy nghĩ thêm về điều gì đó.
Example: You don’t have to give me your decision now. Sleep on it, and let me know tomorrow.

SMELL A RAT: hoài nghi, linh cảm chuyện không ổn
Example: The minute I came in, I smelled a rat.

CHANGE ONE’S MIND: đổi ý
Example: I was planning to work late tonight, but I changed my mind. I’ll do extra work on the weekend instead.

BEHIND THE TIMES: lỗi thời, hết thời
Example: My friend never likes using smart phones. She’s so BEHIND THE TIMES.

IN THE RED: mất tiền, lỗ
Example: Business is really going poorly these days. We’ve been in the red for the past three months.

KEEP ONE’S CHIN UP: dũng cảm và tiếp tục
Example: I know things have been difficult for you recently, but keep your chin up. It will get better soon.

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON: rất hiếm khi
Example: i used to see him all the time, but now he just visits me once in a blue moon “

DOWN IN THE DUMPS: buồn
Example: I was really down in the dumps after my dog died”

COST AN ARM AND A LEG: rất đắt tiền
Example: Those hats must have cost an arm and a leg

EARLY BIRD: người hay dậy sớm
Example: I never miss sunrise. I’m an early bird.

KEEP AN EYE ON: để mắt tới
Example: Keep an eye on the noodles, there almost done.

AGAINST THE CLOCK: chạy đua với thời gian
Example: With her term paper due on Monday, she was racing against the clock to finish it.

ON CLOUD NINE: cực kỳ sung sướng, hạnh phúc như ở trên mây)
Example: She just bought her first new car and she’s on cloud nine.

HIT THE HAY: đi ngủ
Example: It’s after 12 o’clock. I think it’s time to hit the hay.

BE SICK TO DEATH OF SOMETHING/ DOING SOMETHING: chán đến chết
Example: I’m sick to death of doing nothing but work. Let’s go out tonight and have fun.

IN THE NICK OF TIME: vừa đúng/kịp lúc
Example: I got to the drugstore just in the nick of time. It’s a good thing, because I really need this medicine!

AT ALL COSTS: bằng mọi giá
Example: My dream is to become a successful businessman and I will work hard for it AT ALL COSTS

DOWN TO EARTH: thực tế
Example: It’s time we were brought down to earth to figure out difficult situation, and offer a good solution.

KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE: một mũi tên trúng 2 đích
Example: I killed two birds with one stone and saw some old friends while I was in Leeds visiting my parents.

SEE EYE TO EYE: nhất trí
Example: My father and I see eye to eye on most things.

FIND MY FEET: dần quen với việc gì
Example: Moving to a new city was difficult as first, but I soon found my feet.
